Minicamp is a little different, and not just because it’s mandatory. Practice sessions are a little longer—30 minutes, according to head coach Matt Patricia. Additionally, players have a full slate of activities for the day, upwards of 10 hours of on and off-the-field activities. With practice taking on a little more intensity, here’s what I noted from Tuesday’s session.ParticipationAs expected, Damon Harrison Sr. and Darius Slay were both absent from Allen Park. Every single other Lions player was accounted for on the day. However, not everyone was an active participant. The group of players working with trainers for the majority of practice includes the following: Kenny Golladay, Marvin Jones Jr., Tommylee Lewis, Nick Bawden, Isaac Nauta, David Jones, Steve Longa, Jerome Cunningham, Trey Flowers and Austin Bryant.Of that group, only Tommylee Lewis looked far away from being near healthy. Lewis was missing from last week’s practice and was walking around with a pretty significant limp on Tuesday. He did practice catching some passes while stationary, but it’s clear he may sit for a while. Interceptions galoreThe Lions may have been missing Darius Slay, but it was raining interception on Tuesday. By my count, there were at least four picks during the session: Quandre Diggs on a deflected pass, Tavon Wilson on a great read-and-jump, Jamal Agnew with a practice-ending pick six, and... yep, Teez Tabor again.I don’t want to hype up Tabor too much Womens Miles Killebrew Jersey , as I’ve written about him in just about every one of these recaps, but no one is taking advantage of their extra reps more than Tabor right now. He’s consistently been with the first-team defense and he’s been as consistent of a playmaker as you can be right now. And it’s not just interceptions. Tabor had a great pass breakup on Andy Jones on Tuesday, and nearly made another a few plays later. Obviously, Tabor isn’t going against the greatest WR competition with Marvin Jones and Kenny Golladay out, but he’s doing everything in his power to overcome two rough years to start his NFL career.Don’t forget Tavon WilsonThe Lions have a slew of young safeties in Tracy Walker and Will Harris, but don’t overlook veteran Tavon Wilson in the picture. Wilson made a great case for himself on Tuesday, not only picking up an interception, but looking fierce as a box safety. On one play, he closed in so hard on Michael Roberts that he actually knocked him over. About 30 minutes later, he crashed down on Roberts again for a minimal gain, and nearly put him on the ground again.SloppyFor the first time this offseason, NFL officials were in attendance, and the flags were flying. At one point, the second-team offense was struggling to simply get a snap off because of snap count and alignment issues. Additionally, during 11-on-11s, the defense had too many men on the field and that caused the entire defensive roster—not just the players on the field—to do a full lap around the field. No change on the linesFrank Ragnow remained at center on Tuesday. Kenny Wiggins continues to get reps ahead of Oday Aboushi at left guard. There was one interesting change with the second team, however. Leo Koloamatangi slid over to left guard while Joe Dahl got a significant look at center. Shortly after I noticed the change, Dahl got the snap count wrong and was forced to do a lap. For someone trying to display his versatility, Dahl can’t afford to lose reps while doing laps. Nothing new to report on the defensive line.Random thoughtsBrandon Powell made a couple of good plays, including a full-extended grab with a toe-tap. After catching the ball, he looked up to the referee, who confirmed he got his feet in.I haven’t written much about T.J. Hockenson during OTAs, but it’s only because he’s been boringly great. He’s clearly going to be a significant part of this offense, and I’ve only seen one drop all offseason. Interestingly, I keep confusing him with a slot receiver Womens Devon Kennard Jersey , because of how fluidly and quick he moves. Despite his size and length, he looks small and shifty out there. Andrew Adams had a good day, as well. The Lions’ safety depth chart is looking very impressive early on. Amani Oruwariye remains with the second and third teams. He hasn’t done much, and the one play that sticks out from Tuesday was when rookie Travis Fulgham created a yard or two of separation on a comeback route. Though I haven’t seen Oruwariye get burned yet, he also appears to have some ground to make up before we can start putting him in the CB2 conversation. Yeah, that’s how it goes.So with so much certainty in the top...two picks and not much thereafter, here are my three things I’m certain (I’m not really certain of these) the Los Angeles Rams will do in the draft ranked by certainty.1.) The Rams will take a safety before Round 4.This is my lockiest lock of the Rams’ draft. It’s more of a lock than Missouri Tigers QB Drew Lock.Eric Weddle should be a fine late-career bridge. At some point, we need to develop a spectrum for these though. Certainly, LT Andrew Whitworth should be at one pole — a late-career veteran who can still perform at a high level among the best at his position. Perhaps OLB Connor Barwin is at the other pole. Where Weddle, LB Clay Matthews and DL Ndamukong Suh fall on that spectrum? Let’s hold off on that for now.But beyond Weddle who might only give the Rams one year of service, the Rams could need a pairing for S John Johnson III. And given the Rams’ predilection for not meeting market value for their defensive backs with Johnson scheduled to be a free agent after the 2020 season, the Rams don’t have anything cemented at safety for the long-term.Given the quality of the safety class in this year’s draft and the long, long, long list of visits the Rams have extended to various safety prospects this year, this is my top lock for what I think will actually happen over the next three days.Not sure who. Not sure exactly when. But taking a safety before Round 4 when things open up on Day 3 with the 103rd overall pick? I’m willing to put the pencil down and use ink for this one.2.) But nothing came out of the Rams’ 2018 season with more impact than the status of Gurley’s knee.Gurley averaged 21.25 carries per game in the first eight contests in 2018. The likelihood he will average anywhere near that workrate in 2019 is much closer to 0% than 100%. How the Rams mitigate the decrease? TBD. It could be more passing which was the preference in the second half of the regular season. It could be involving others from the RB depth chart which was the preference in the playoffs, though the subject of that preference wasn’t preferred enough to keep around.But if the Rams aren’t comfortable with the current RB depth chart supporting either (or both) of those two options, a pick might be mandatory at some point. And at what point might depends on Gurley’s knee.Given how unwilling the Rams have been to be truthful and/or sincere about his knee and how unwilling or unable Rams media have been to get to the bottom of the story, the proceedings of the next three days are the best piece of evidence since Gurley’s limited participation in the last two games of the Rams’ season to cluing us in as to how the Rams feel about his longevity. The previous time the Rams played in a Super Bowl, the opponent was New England. It didn’t work out so well for the then-St. Louis team.The Patriots, of course, have made a habit of being in the NFL championship game — this is their eighth since that 2002 victory over the Greatest Show On Turf.Here’s how they’ll match up in Atlanta:WHEN NEW ENGLAND HAS THE BALLThanks to a dominating line led by LT Trent Brown (77), C David Andrews (60) and RG Shaq Mason (69), Tom Brady (12) barely was touched and never was sacked by Kansas City in the AFC title game. And the Chiefs led the league in sacks. If that group can be just as stout against All-Pro DT Aaron Donald, the only unanimous choice for the squad, Ndamukong Suh (93) and Michael Brockers (90) Orlando Pace Jersey , Brady could have another one of his MVP performances. However, the secondary he’ll face this time is far superior to what the Chiefs put on the field, particularly with cornerbacks Aqib Talib (21) and Marcus Peters (22) — and backup Nickell Robey-Coleman (23), he of the now-infamous helmet-hit pass interference non-call against the Saints.Those two must be aggressive at the line of scrimmage against WRs Julian Edelman (11) and Chris Hogan (15), who were so open on some routes against Kansas City it looked like a passing drill.The other intriguing matchup here is TE Rob Gronkowski (87) against safeties Lamarcus Joyner (20) and John Johnson III (43), who are physical enough to deal with Gronk, but it’s a wearying and thankless task.And there’s this for LA to deal with: Rookie Sony Michel (26) has become a ground force with his power and instincts. Fellow RB James White (28) is one of the best receivers out of the backfield in the league, and third-stringer Rex Burkhead (34) scored twice, including the winning TD for the AFC crown.Rams defensive coordinator Wade Phillips will challenge Brady with his schemes, but LA must disrupt the QB’s timing and comfort zone. Brady’s O-line has to prevent that.WHEN LOS ANGELES HAS THE BALLMichel’s former teammate at Georgia, All-Pro RB Todd Gurley (30), has been battling knee issues. While late-season pickup C.J. Anderson (35) has been masterful, the Rams need a healthy and productive Gurley for the Super Bowl. At least he’s had extra time to heal.Gurley led the NFL with 21 TDs and ranked fourth with 1 Deacon Jones Jersey ,831 yards from scrimmage. He’d be a handful as a receiver for Patriots LBs Dont’a Hightower (54) and Kyle Van Noy (53), who comes off a superb outing in Kansas City. So one of the DBs, perhaps safeties Devin McCourty (32) or Patrick Chung (23), could get some assignments.The Rams want to have balance on offense, and they certainly have the options in the passing game with Jared Goff (16) throwing to WRs Robert Woods (17), Brandin Cooks (12) and rapidly developing Josh Reynolds (83). Cooks will be eager for a big game after the Patriots dealt him to LA last offseason. He’ll likely see plenty of All-Pro CB Stephon Gilmore, who struggled a bit in KC.New England managed four sacks of Patrick Mahomes and the Rams can’t be that generous if they expect to carry off the Lombardi Trophy. Steady linemen LT Andrew Whitworth (77), LG Rodger Saffold (76) and RT Rob Havenstein (79) must hold their own against DE Trey Flowers (98), Van Noy and the guys on the interior for New England.Goff vs. Brady would seem a mismatch. But Goff and his team beat Drew Brees for the NFC title.SPECIAL TEAMSWhat more can Greg The Leg do? Well, LA placekicker Greg Zuerlein (4) could follow his clutch work in the Big Easy with a Super Bowl-winning boot.Rams P Johnny Hekker (6) converted a fake punt for a first down at New Orleans and has one of the most powerful legs in the league.The Rams aren’t exceptional on returns, but they aren’t inept, either. JoJo Natson (19) has handled most of the punt runbacks, while Blake Countess (24) is the kick returner.The Patriots are more likely to break something in the return game with Cordarrelle Patterson (84) on kickoffs. New England features the usually reliable Edelman on punts Eric Dickerson Jersey , although he did — or didn’t — fumble one against the Chiefs.Stephen Gostkowski (3) has made more pressure attempts than nearly any current NFL placekicker this side of record-setter Adam Vinatieri, and Ryan Allen (6) does a solid job punting.COACHINGSeeing how the Patriots dominated the Chiefs early on both sides of the ball, OC Josh McDaniels and unofficial DC Brian Flores had a superb game plan. But KC began moving the ball almost at will in the second half, and the Rams are capable of the same. That makes for a key question: Can LA slow down the precision passing and powerful/slashing running of Michel?LA coach Sean McVay is the hot commodity on the pro football market. Every team looking for a new head coach has at least investigated people who’ve worked with McVay, who just turned 33. Nothing that happens in Atlanta during Super Bowl week is likely to bother them. A sixth title would tie the Patriots with the Steelers for most in the Super Bowl era.The Rams could energize the Los Angeles area about the NFL with a championship just three seasons into their return to Hollywood. Before seeing his season end with a shoulder injury in December, he amassed 73 touches for 262 yards. The 5’9, 220 lbs back was unable to bounce back from the injury in 2017 spent all of it on injured reserve as well. In April, the Chargers elected to release Farrow.WR K.J. MayeK.J. Maye also went unselected during the 2016 NFL draft and was picked up by the New York Giants as a free agent.
